Anti-Slavery Award 2004 - 26 Oct 2004

Each year Anti Slavery International, a not for profit organisation, presents the anti-slavery award to organisations or individuals to draw attention to the continuing problem of slavery in the world today and to provide recognition for long-term, courageous campaigning in the countries most affected.

The 2004 winner is Timidria, for their pioneering efforts in the fight against slavery in Niger.

Timidria is a grassroots organisation that works to eliminate slavery and all forms of discrimination in Niger. Timidria has spearheaded the anti-slavery movement in Niger, raising awareness of the issue and integrating former slaves into society. They successfully campaigned for amendments to the recently adopted Penal Code which defines, prohibits and punishes slavery, and have carried out a groundbreaking study into the extent and nature of slavery in Niger. Timidria are now campaigning for the proper implementation of the new law and for survivors of slavery to be given the help they need to rebuild their lives.

Timidria's President, Ilguilas Weila, will receive the Award on behalf of the organisation. Internationally renowned Sierra Leonean filmmaker Sorious Samura will present the Award.
