Rice and Beans - 30 Nov 2004
'The poor man's field may produce abundant food, but injustice sweeps it away.'
Proverbs 13:23
Rice and Beans began last year with several people fasting and praying over lent, for issues of social injustice. And the project will be running again in 2005.
The vision is to see people make or renew a commitment to their hungry brothers and sisters across the globe, to humble themselves before their God and seek His face. To see an army of people, fighting on their knees, giving sacrificially of themselves, hungry to see change in an unjust world. Interested? Read on.
The idea is to fast in order to raise awareness about injustices in the world and to encourage people to look at how their one billion hungry neighbours live, that in giving up something of the comfort of our lives we may alleviate the discomfort of others. The reason is the world is an unjust place. About 24,000 people die every day from hunger.
'The spirit of the Lord is upon me; he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of site for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favour' Luke 4 vs. 18-19
This is how Jesus defined his mission. As Christians we are called to follow the example of our Lord. Rice and Beans seeks, in some small way, to help people to do that.
