Pray for Egypt: Peace in ChaosThe Phantom Intercessor - 26 Jan 2011
Barely weeks after Egypt hit the headlines with the New Year's car bomb attack on its Coptic minority, the international community finds its attention turned again to this influential Middle Eastern power. January 25th was hailed as the 'Day of Wrath' as many took to the streets in an attempt to re-create a Tunisian style revolution. Decades of poverty, high unemployment, police brutality and governmental corruption have caused widespread discontent that spilled out into protests in many of Egypt's large cities. Thousands chanted and marched, tearing down posters of the President and calling for change.
The night before I attended a prayer meeting at a church in Cairo, close to the main square which saw a lot of the action. The building was full of Egyptians hungry to see God move in their nation. We cried out for God's mercy upon this land, for unity in His church as we stand together and lift up one voice in persistent prayer, and repented for fundamentalism in all its different guises. The call to prayer is being raised in this nation. Who will answer it?
Whether change is coming or not, it is too early to say. What we do know is that this is a time of spiritual transition for this land and the current shakings are only an indication of the activity under the surface. Check out Isaiah 19 and join me in proclaiming,
Blessed be Egypt, my people.
