Sun, Sea & Prayer: Beach Mission in South AfricaCarla Harding - 31 Jan 2011
Prayer cannot stay in a 24-7 Prayer Room. All over the world, people are bursting out of the place of prayer, and bringing the Spirit of God and the good news of Jesus into their neighbourhoods, cities and even their local beaches! Take a look at this great report from Kenton on Sea, South Africa where a group turn a problem into a missional-prayer opportunity!
"CORE is a group that has done a beach outreach over the new years period for the last four years." Writes Darryl Ried from Kenton on Sea, South Africa. "We pray 24-7 for the duration of the outreach...
We had another great time this last year. Because we camp we have previously used a tent as our 24-7 Prayer Room, which used to get horribly hot during the day. This year I forgot the prayer tent at home. So we ended up going back to the Moravian style of prayer where we got people to sign up for there hour slot and either find a shady area to pray from or do a prayer walk through the town for their hour. We had what we called a prayer box filled with interesting goodies to help stimulate creativity. We basically put the tent in a box and made it mobile :)
Some of the best prayer times were at night, where for the last 2 years we transformed our free coffee tent into a "spiritual reading" tent. Many hours were spent praying behind the tent interceding for the people inside being ministered to, usually into the wee hours of the morning.
Ooo I almost forgot... while i was registering us on the 24-7 website, I had a thought..."wouldn't it be cool if we did a prayer exchange with someone else praying on the other side of the world." I only had a minute or 2 because I had to be at a meeting. So I quickly looked through the long list of groups praying around the world. Malaysia jumped out at me, so I emailed them, not really expecting a reply... The next day a reply was waiting for me in my inbox. She liked the idea and felt the Lord had just reminded her that they are to be a house of prayer for the nations. She had also just bought a world map. so they could put it to use straight away. So we swoped prayer topics and they spent their last day and a half praying for us, and we prayed for them.
It was an incredible feeling to know that we are part of something world wide, bigger and greater than any one of us is aware of."
I love how Darryl and the team embraced the chance to take prayer out of their tent and onto the beach! How could you do something similar? Find out more about who's praying 24-7 when with our prayer room diary and arrange your own international hand overs.
