Unprecedented Opportunity for 24-7 to Make a Difference... - 9 Jan 2005

It's a once-in-a-lifteime kind of a year for citizens of the United Kingdom and celebrities like Bono (left) have been quick to spot the possibilities...

So what's the big deal?

In 2005, by sheer fluke (or perhaps by God's clever planning), 24-7 finds itself mobilising a whopping six (yes six!) British denominations and organisations in entire years of non-stop, night-and-day prayer. And as we do so, the UK government will be:
  • hosting the G7 Finance Ministers meeting in February
  • hosting the G8 gathering of the world's most powerful leaders
  • holding the presidency of the European Union (EU)
  • facing a General Election
The gap between the worlds’s rich and poor has never been wider...
Many people are determined to use this unprecedented convergence of events in 2005 to champion the plight of the poor. Celebrities like Jamelia (below) plus more than 100 agencies - many of them Christian - have come together in Britain to launch the 'Make Poverty History' campaign, symbolised by a white wrist band.

Perhaps, in this historic year, the fact that we are mobilising more prayer than ever before in the UK really is significant. Maybe, in God's eyes, we have a small part to play in making poverty history. We're 100% committed to this campaign because it is so close to the very heart of what prayer and worship is all about...

The gap between the worlds’s rich and poor has never been wider. Mal-

nutrition, AIDS, wars & illiteracy are a daily reality for millions.
But it isn’t chance or bad luck that keeps people trapped in bitter,
unrelenting poverty. It’s man-made factors like:
+++ a glaringly unjust global trade system,

+++ a debt burden so great that it suffocates any chance of recovery
+++ insufficient and ineffective aid.

Wherever you live in the world, please pray for the UK, for Prime Minister Tony Blair and Chancellor Gordon Brown. Pray that decisions would be made that will truly make a difference in millions of lives.
