Pray HIV week 1: I am with youAndy Freeman - 30 Dec 2011

During Christmas week we're taking a look back over the year and re-blogging some of our favourite posts. HIV affects millions across the planet and so 24-7 Prayer took November to learn more about HIV and pray for those affected by the virus. Check out this post, which was the first in the series, to find out a bit more about HIV and how your prayers can help.

Our month of prayer for HIV/AIDS is leading us to World Aids Day on 1st December.  In 1987 two guys named Bunn and Netter proposed the idea within agencies combating the virus.  1st December 1988 was the first World Aids Day, and a red ribbon became a symbol now globally connected with solidarity for those facing HIV/AIDS.

This week, as part of our prayer we’d like to encourage you to tie a piece of red ribbon around your arm and wear it as you go through your week.  It’s a simple statement of solidarity ... it says whilst you pray the simple phrase “I am with you”.

When we think of Christian intercessory prayer, we think of prayer on behalf of others - prayer in the gap.  Our model for this is Jesus, who intercedes for us to the Father.  Can you imagine, right now, Jesus whispering your name to the Father .... He’s for you and with you.

Jesus’ intercession flows from the incarnation.  He came into the story.  He lived a fully human life.  His death and resurrection were solidarity and salvation for us.  Now He promises “I am with you” (Matthew 28:20)

In his book ‘Awakening Cry’ Pete Greig suggests that “Intercessory prayer can only flow out of a deep level of personal identification.”  In this week, as we pray about HIV, lets pray with solidarity with the real human stories affected by the virus.  Lets pray with a heart that says “I am with you”.

This month 24-7 are commiting to pray for HIV and AIDS in the run up to world AIDS day on 1st December. To find our more read Andy Freemans excellent article and download the first part of our PrayHIV prayer guide.
