24-7 People Profile - Johan HeuverRebecca Swarbrick - 15 Feb 2012
1) How and when did you first get involved with 24-7 Prayer?
After the student-prayer-conference with Pete Greig in Houten (18/19 November).
2) What attracted you to the movement?
It’s calling people back to prayer as an important and powerful base of the Christian life.
3) Do you have a favourite place to go to pray?
My favourite place to pray is at my own dorm. I have a comfortable chair there, where I like to read from my Bible and pray. I also use our prayer room at school. I try to get others with me in the hope it’s getting used more often.
4) You are head of the board of a Student Union in Ede. How do you find rest and refreshment amongst the hustle and bustle of life?
That can be really challenging, but as a student you have one advantage: You’re really flexible. I try to make appointments with God and myself to get these moments into my schedule. For example:
- After the lunch I regularly go to the prayer room of our university.
- I am the initiator of a Bible-in-one-year-project where we read the Bible in one year with a group of 30 students and keep each other motivated by posting on our Facebook-page: http://www.facebook.com/groups/138943116217986/
- Prayer-trio: With two friends we meet once or twice a week at 6:45 in the morning to reflect on some bible verses and pray for each other.
5) Is there a special book or poem that you would recommend?
'Hunger for Reality' (George Verwer). In the beginning of this book is a prayer for humility. With some friends I’ve discussed and prayed it many times. It ends with: "Lord, give me the desire that others may become holier than I, provided that I become as holy as I should."
At the moment I’m reading the small book Pioneers of revival (Fountain Trust) – also translated in Dutch – and I’m getting fascinated about the important role of prayer in the lives of all these important Christian key figures.
8) Any final words of wisdom?
‘Everything not born in prayer, is born in pride’ (Joy Dawson)
