"The greatest evangelical missionary movement in history" - 31 May 2012

Stadiums full, hundreds of thousands from all denominations, countries and generations gathering, millions tuning in  – this was the biggest prayer meeting the world had ever seen.

So, one week on from the World Prayer Assembly in Indonesia the question is “What happens now?”

Glenn Sheppard, one of the founding visionaries behind the first International Prayer Gathering in Seoul, Korea in 1984 believes that, if history is anything to go by, “What happens now” could change ‘mission’ as we know it. This is his account of the 1984 International Prayer Gathering and what he sees the potential impact could be for Indonesia today:

“At the 1984 Assembly we had 7,000 delegates from 70 countries, almost 300,000 Koreans in the great prayer gatherings. It was life-changing. It was the birth of what we know as the modern prayer movement.”

“We came to Korea because of their great prayer movement … they were experiencing true revival….it was a nation alive with fire. It was a nation that a few years before had less than 2% of the population as believers, and in less than 2 decades 38% of the population were born-again, on-fire, praying, loving followers of Jesus.”

“The Korean church came alive to missions and out of it they began to pray and 10,000 missionaries were sent out over the next 20 years all over the world. You will not find a nation on earth today where there’s not a Korean missionary.”

“That was the explosion of the Korean mission movement around the world. And of course we’ve heard here at the WPA, what God is doing now in China and other nations, and Indonesia has been experiencing the same thing. If anything happens …you will see over the next decade or so, out of Indonesia – the largest Muslim country on Earth – the greatest evangelical missionary movement in human history. You’ll see it come out of Indonesia. If it bears fruit of the IPA it will be a reproduction of the mission thrust that’s like nothing else.”

So…..what happens now?

God is doing great things in Indonesia, we encourage you to continue partnering with them in prayer as they move forward in the momentum of the World Prayer Assembly. Here are some specific prayer requests from the organisers
