Extreme Prayer: Man hikes to the North Pole to pray for the earth - 14 Jun 2012

Would you brave -35c temperatures, overcome walls of ice, open water, a full day confined to the safety of a tent and 24-7 daylight to pray the Lord's prayer? Andrew Broughton-Taylor did - after 50 miles of hiking through some of harshest conditions on the planet, he stood on top of the world and ushered his prayer  “Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on Earth as it is heaven.”

Andrew is a member of '6 ordinary men' who had a mission to raise £250,000 for the charity SPARKS. After climbing Mount Kilimanjaro and cycling London to Paris – hiking to the North Pole was set to be the finale that would see them raise the quarter of a million.

Andrew, however, had an even greater motivation for the trip. As the UK and Ireland join together for Kingdom Come 2012, a year of unbroken prayer, he dreamed of standing on top the world and praying God’s reign to come “on Earth as it is in Heaven”. On April 12th 2012 he got to experience his dream and as the '6 ordinary men' arrived at the North Pole he was able to share the gospel (and some Gideon bibles) with his companions and, from literally the top of world, echo the words of Jesus in the Lord’s prayer.

While preparing for the trip Andrew felt led to link with other believers all over the world and encourage simultaneous prayer. He began to contact Christian organisations to mobilise a wave of prayer across the globe, even trying to connect with similar believers in the South Pole.

He had these words to conclude about his adventure:

On the days prior to arriving at the Pole I prayed for each of the continents, and on the final day at the Pole it was my privilege to do as I had promised and pray with others over, and for the world.

We will never know how many people joined in, but we trust that it was a further step in praying God's Kingdom into this world.

I have to add, I feel extremely blessed to have seen an aspect of creation which most do not see, this goes to add to the Majesty of our God. The experience will live with us all for the rest of our lives.

One of the the most rewarding prayer rhythms we use at 24-7 is praying the Lord's prayer at 12.00pm (midday) each day. We have found it gives God space to invade our everyday lives and focus our attention on Him. Visit "The Lord's Prayer at Midday" to find more information.
