Hijacked by prayer: Meet KatieKatie Cornick - 25 Jul 2012
"I asked the Lord when I was a freshman (first year) to give me a place of prayer, just a place of refuge where I could seek Him because I knew that was going to be the only way that I survived college"
It was a simple prayer, but a prayer that would radically change the course of Katie Cornick's life. Year's later, Katie's life has been hijacked by 24-7 Prayer and she is now helping to pioneer it's work in Asia. At the recent million strong prayer event in Indonesia we caught up with Katie as she reminisced on getting infected with a vision that has carried her around the world.
"God answered my prayer and I quickly got involved with a prayer ministry on campus and started doing days and weeks of prayer. Then one day I got a call from someone who was mobilising prayer in campuses all around my state of Georgia (USA), this turned out to be Dana Hernandez who eventually got involved in the National Team of Campus America. We started working together, helping to mobilise prayer by prayer walking campuses and meeting with students. That's how I got involved with 24-7 Prayer, whenever there was a gathering I would fly out and meet with the 24-7 crew."
Katie graduated and moved to Athens (Georgia, USA) with Dana to help lead a prayer room located on top of a strip club and then on top of a bar.
"We would just lay on faces and pray the city of Athens at midnight with all the music banging for the college scene. We would just meet with the Lord there. It was really beautiful. We have amazing stories of rescuing students out of depression, and things like that, through prayer."
Katie thought she was going to be in Athens for along time, but as she drove out to Kansas City for a Campus America gathering God was about to change her plans.
"When I got there and was in the Prayer Room the Lord said really clearly "Welcome home! These are the people I'm giving to you. I'm calling you to a people and not a place" So I spent a few days there asking God "What does it mean to be called to a people and not a place?, along my journey I've always had prayer as kind of pillar in my relationship with the Lord, but not community. To see prayer and community combined was unique and was really why He brought me to 24-7"
So Katie moved out to the 24-7 community in Kansas City, but God hadn't finished finished changing her plans yet…
Tune into the 24-7 blog tomorrow to find out how Katie's adventure eventually led her to helping with the relief effort in Japan and pioneering 24-7 in that nation.
