Prayer Alert for the Philippines: 900 causalities from Typhoon BophaCarla Harding - 14 Dec 2012

“People affected by Typhoon Bopha in the southern Philippines are in urgent need of food and water as supplies run low in isolated communities.” Writes Ziggie Buksh from Jesus Revolution, a youth prayer ministry within the nation.

Typhoon Bopha hit the Philippines last week causing an estimated 900 casualties so far.  Around 300 people are still missing, almost 400,000 have been displaced and many roads are still not passable in the affected areas of Compostela Valley and Davao Oriental.

“Flooding and landslides triggered by the typhoon wiped out communities near the coast on the island of Mindanao and also left many inland villages cut off.” Continues Ziggie (pictured left). “Those trapped are running out of food, and streams, which were the only source of water for many, have been blocked or polluted by mud and debris.

Houses, church buildings and agricultural livelihoods have been totally wiped out.  Looking further ahead, there will be a need to rebuild churches and accommodation for pastors and their families.  Relief operations are now underway by different missions organizations, including non-government agencies, helping our affected people and rebuilding communities.”

How can we pray?

Riza Olaguer (below), also from Jesus Revolution asks us to pray for:

"For God's mercy and intervention to reach all victims.  For rescue, comfort, healing and salvation, especially those who are still unreachable by relief agencies.

For the government and the nation, that it will learn valuable lessons from this calamity (they say that the damage was multiplied by landslides due to illegal logging.)

For the Church: to be a prophetic voice bringing wisdom and understanding to the nation and it's leaders, and to be raised up even more in prayer and unity.

Finally, let this tragedy pave the way for revival in Mindanao.  We want the glory of the Lord to be revealed not only through material provision but also through miracles and the comfort and work of His Spirit."
