UK: MPs support Parliament and Whitehall 24-7prayer week - 4 Apr 2005

Come and JOIN IN! Sunday 19th June - Sunday 26th June, 24-7prayer across Parliament and the many Whitehall departments - praying for God to bless those who work there, for wisdom and peace, for God's Kingdom to come.

We've been working with friends in the Parliamentary Christian Fellowship and the Whitehall Network for a few months now, putting ideas together, and there's growing excitment and anticipation, especially given the fact that an election will have just taken place - what a great time to pray!... the week will be crammed-full of prayer gatherings - with prayer rooms in offices and conference rooms, prayer teams in Big Ben and along the line-of-route in the Houses of Parliament, prayer groups across Whitehall departments, and some others that we'll have to save until later [grin]!

Here's how you can get involved;

1. Mark the week in your (and your churches!) calender, and pray towards it - pray for doors and opportunities to open up, for wisdom and guidance and encouragement for the many Christians who work in these places.

2. From Monday 20th until Saturday 25th we'll be gathering every morning at 11am next to the Houses of Parliament (in the sunshine, hopefully!) to prayer-walk the whole area. Come and join us - bring a crowd! Email for more details.

3. Every evening, from Sunday 19th until Friday 24th, we're hoping that local churches will host prayer events that focus on prayer for Parliament and Whitehall. We'll post more details here as soon as we can, but maybe you could keep an evening or two free to come and join in?

4. We'd like to encourage churches to take on a 24-hour period during that week, or even a 12-hour nightshift (8pm till 8am? The night-hours cannot be covered in Parliament and Whitehall itself, for security reasons), to pray. As with all of the above, we'll keep a flow of (email/phone) communication going between the prayer rooms, prayer-walkers and prayer events, so we can best figure out what God might be saying to us. Again, email if you'd likie to join in!

More to follow... but for now, here's what the MPs are saying;

“As a new Parliament begins its work this is a wonderful opportunity to pray that the Holy Spirit will bless the work of Parliament and that wisdom and discernment will colour its decisions." Alistair Burt MP for Bedfordshire North East (Conservative)

"I would encourage all those praying for politics and government that you pray for the integrity of individuals, that they can express their faith and their conscience in the decisions that they make, and that they can do so without fear of favour, fear or retribution in our country and elsewhere." David Drew MP for Stroud (Labour)

"The Bible urges us to pray for those in authority, and the 24/7 week of prayer is a fantastic opportunity for us to get together and do just this at the start of a brand new Parliamentary term. As the chair of this year's National Prayer Breakfast in Westminster, I feel that 2005 is a significant year of prayer for Parliament and I warmly encourage you to get involved."  Steve Webb MP for Northavon (Liberal Democrat)

Come on!
