We are a Pentecost people - 17 May 2013
Jesus makes some outrageous statements in the bible, “eat my flesh, drink my blood” probably caused a few jaws to drop, or what about “I will rebuild the temple in 3 days” (the temple that took mighty King Solomon seven years to build!) Of course, we can see how all these things came to pass, but just imagine how they sounded when Jesus first proclaimed them 2000 years ago.
There is another promise of Jesus that must have seemed ridiculous when the disciples heard it: “it is good that I go away, then I will send the helper to you.” (John 16:7) Jesus was announcing His departure, and strangest of all, He was saying this was great news.
As Pentecost arrives, I wonder how many of us really believe those words. That in God’s eyes; the Spirit inside of us is better than Jesus by the side of us.
Pentecost is the day that the Spirit came into a 24-7 prayer meeting and transformed a group of fearful radicals into world-changers.
As we remember Pentecost, let us remember that we are a people who are empowered by the very Spirit of God.
We are a Pentecost people.
This year Pentecost Sunday is on the 19th May
