Let Freedom RingAndy Freeman - 22 Jul 2013
“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”
Martin Luther King, Jr.
In over 100 cities across the United States last week, peaceful demonstrations took place after neighbourhood watch activist George Zimmerman was found not guilty of the murder of black teenager Trayvon Martin (BBC link). Zimmerman had said he had killed the 17 year old in self defence but many have suggested it was simply a young black teenager wearing a hoody.
The rallies - some of which were large gatherings but many small - sought to speak out against prejudice due to the colour of a person’s skin - especially that judgement that presume’s a person more dangerous or likely to commit a crime due to their skin colour. Many activists shouted ‘I am Trayvon Martin’ in solidarity with the young man who was like any other teenager around the world.
This controversy comes as America and the world prepares to commemorate that 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s ‘I have a dream speech’ where he called for ‘freedom’ to ring for those who face prejudice.
Jesus was one of King’s inspirations and for Jesus there was no judgement of people because of their race (like the Samaritan woman), their job (like the Tax Collector) or their history (like so many of his broken and hurting disciples).
Paul put it like this:
“There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” Galatians 3:28
Why not take some time to pray for issues of equality today. As you walk around and live out your day, consider the judgements and prejudices you have and ask God to help you and to help our world to treat people in a different way.
Let freedom ring.
