The Heasleys settle into life on Ibiza - 3 May 2005

"Well we’ve been here just over 3 weeks and it has flown by!" Brian and Tracy Heasley report from Ibiza where they're now living and working to establish a community base on the island.

"The journey here was okay - 25 hours driving from Diss to Barcelona.

If you have ever considered driving around Paris, we strongly recommend that you avoid 8.30am on a Friday morning!

The highest stress point of the journey was at the port in Barcelona – having booked with Balearia, it was a little disconcerting to find the Balearia offices closed and no Balearia boat in sight!  After desperate praying in the car, a near collision with a police car determined not to let us drive the wrong way down a one way street, and several short sprints to different buildings by Tracy and her sister, we eventually discovered that we had been put on the rival ferry company’s boat and drove our car and removal van on just 20 minutes before departure!

The house is great – when we agreed to rent it back in February, it was not particularly clean so it was fantastic to find that it had been completely redecorated.

All our furniture arrived in one piece, thanks to the packing techniques of our wonderful friend Les and Tracy’s dad who were determined to fit everything in the van for us.
We want to say a really big thank you for all your emails, cards and phone calls; we really appreciate it. Sorry if we haven’t got back to you yet - our internet connection here in Spain is a little erratic but hopefully by next week we should have broadband and life will be easier. Also we are having some problems with an over zealous Spam filter so some of your emails may not have made it. We are getting it sorted!

Life here is interesting!  We are trying hard to get to grips with the language:

Tracy is finding it easier than Brian who finds himself saying “pardon, no hablo mucho espanol” a lot. However we have all agreed as long as each week we know more than we did the previous week, we are doing okay.

Ellis and Dan are settling well in their new school; it helps that they are good pals (on the whole!) and are at the same school.  The biggest challenge academically is that they are learning 3 languages; Spanish, German and Catalan.  Sometimes Daniel starts counting in German, changes part way to Spanish and finishes in Catalan! Please pray that they make good friends here – they miss their friends in England.

We have met quite a few people now and are just trying to get our heads around the best way forward ; it will take time but the overall  picture is becoming clearer, new ideas are sprouting and  there are some enthusiastic and helpful people to advise us on practical matters. One of our first priorities is to find a room in the West End of San Antonio; please pray that we find favour and the ideal spot to base ourselves.

Well the journey continues! There is a song on the new U2 album which has the song “One step closer to knowing” and that’s how we feel. We are getting closer to establishing something out here, but it is going to take time. It’s strange - this is such a beautiful place - but lots of what happens is seriously dark. There really are no boundaries here.

We are happy as a family and enjoying more time together. Brian will be speaking in Belfast this weekend so please keep Tracy and the boys in your thoughts and prayers.

Thank you for you continued support and encouragement.

All our love

Brian, Tracy, Ellis and Dan

It’s a big ask to move a family in such a short time to a place like Ibiza. It's been a big step of faith for Brian and Tracey.
