Mobilise prayer to tackle corruptionPete Greig - 11 Oct 2013

24-7 Prayer are supporting the EXPOSED campaign as they look to mobilise 100 million people in 100 nations to shine a light on corruption. A trillion dollars ($1,000,000,000,000) a year are lost in bribes, dishonest deals and tax evasion; this affects us all but particularly the poorest people in the poorest countries. Over the next week we will be publishing a new blogpost each day, highlighting a different aspect of corruption. Pete Greig kicks us off....

The martyred pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer once imagined a madman driving a car through a busy shopping area, knocking down pedestrians. If it happened just once, he said, you might consider that your priority was to attend to those who had been injured. But if the madman kept returning your priority would be to prevent further injury by apprehending him. When we deal with corruption we get to the root of so many other problems that are affecting people in society. The Gospel of Jesus Christ relates to social transformation as well as private morality.

Corruption is clearly happening in the UK with the British media being caught phone hacking, leading to the imprisonment of journalists. Trusted celebrities at the BBC have been exposed as sexual predators and certain bankers have brought down financial institutions. Even the church has been shamed by sexual scandals. The apostle Paul said that our battle is not against flesh and blood but against principalities in high places. It’s therefore vital that we resist such abusive systems prayerfully, politically, professionally and privately.

Countries around the globe need to stand together against corruption as our world is more connected than ever before. Multinational companies can be bigger than many governments. Crime is a transnational problem. I can trade with another nation at the click of a button. In such a context there is perhaps only one body big enough to engender global transformation. It is a pan-geographic, transnational, multiracial conspiracy of two billion souls - known as the 'Church'.

We at 24-7 Prayer are excited about the EXPOSED week of action. I would encourage churches, universities and other organisations to get involved, and especially to mobilise prayer. I really think that if we join together with our brothers and sisters globally we can change the world.
