#prayeralert: New Technology Brings Tsamounde (Hope) to CameroonLaura Gish - 3 Oct 2014

“Every woman who gives birth has one foot in her grave.”
Cameroonians hope to make this African proverb a concern of the past.
The U.N. Children’s Fund recorded that for every 100,000 live births, 670 women in Cameroon die. In 2012, 61 infants out of 1,000 did not survive birth. Yet, there may be hope to change this tragic reality.
“Women are dying from childbirth-related issues” says Dr. Patrick Okwen, coordinator of M-Health, a project that is using mobile technology to increase access to healthcare services. “Women are dying while giving life.”
Okwen says that many women in Africa have access to a mobile device. Women can send an SMS to a particular number. A GPS will identify the woman’s location and notify nurses to get ready and for the doctor to come to the hospital. This technology may be a breakthrough for Cameroonian women who live in communities that are in dire need of health services. One woman who used the technology said, “I am pretty sure we could have lost this child (and the mother) … if the medical doctor hadn’t shown up.”
The project name —Tsamounde — means hope, in a local Cameroonian language. Praise God for this breakthrough in technology and the hope that it brings to expectant mothers!
Let’s continue to pray for the mothers in Cameroon.
- Praise God for His provision in the use of this technology to alert hospitals and medical care servers in Cameroonian communities.
- Pray that God will bless and grow this advancement to help many more mothers in need of medical care as they give life. Pray for access in communities where it is most needed.
- Ask God to surround expecting mothers with family, friends, and neighbours to help with the mothers’ care and wellbeing.
- Intercede for the Cameroonian communities that are not only desperate for physical care but are desperate for God’s Word. Ask the Lord to bring His Truth to every tribe and language in that country.
