Confessions of a 20-something Christian...Joanna Callender - 16 Dec 2015

I’m not great at reading the Bible, with its old pages, confusing stories and varied genres.

Prayer comes much more naturally to me. Chatting to God is my favourite; sharing about my day, praying for others, praising the Creator for the beauty of creation.

But recently, I’ve realised that the Bible isn’t just full of stories from the past; it's also full of God’s words to me today. Reading it is part of that living, active conversation that I get to enjoy with God daily.

Thinking of the Bible like that makes it more exciting to read, and makes me more willing to pick it up.  I love that God speaks through the books of the Bible - that these words have spoken to millions of people throughout history, unveiling a timeless, powerful message that’s for every human being to read and respond to.

So when I think of the Bible as God’s words for every human on earth, it doesn’t really make sense that this message isn’t available to everyone yet. The Bible still hasn’t been translated into every language. Today, 1 in every 7 people can’t read it.

I’m a bit embarrassed that I’ve taken the Bible for granted when others don’t have it at all.

I’m amazed by people who are translating God’s words so that other humans get to read it too. Seed Company are one organisation doing this, even as I write. It’s incredible to think that because of their effort, other humans get to read the story of the Bible - those beautiful stories that have existed for thousands of years - for the very first time.

I can’t even begin to imagine how to translate the Bible. But I’m really willing to pray for these translation projects. I want to rally behind these incredible linguists who are volunteering hours, weeks and years of their time to Bible translation. Supporting them in prayer is a small commitment of my time -  but one that could have a huge impact on the lives of humans all over the world.

You can do the same by getting to know a people group on Seed Company’s website. Then you can choose how often to pray for them - daily, weekly, monthly or quarterly.

It couldn’t be simpler. But it’s the most important thing you can do.

The words within the pages of this beautiful old book are literally life-changing. The Bible should be available to everyone, so let’s get passionate about other people reading it too. Let’s rally behind with the most powerful weapon we’ve got. Let’s be on our knees in support of others who are making God’s words known to the world.
