How to Run a Prayer Room on Your Campus - 16 Nov 2016
Across the UK and beyond, students have been running prayer rooms on their campuses. It’s leading to amazing testimonies and powerful encounters with God.
This story is from Cardiff, where Kezzie and her CU ran a day of 24-7 Prayer for the very first time:
"It's a beautiful, simple kind of inspiring that pushes you towards Jesus in your daily life..."
We ran our first prayer room in June for one day - almost a whole 24 hours! Most people hadn’t even heard of a 24-7 Prayer room before, let alone been inside one, so it was a very exciting introduction for them.
We split the room in half so that in one half, people could just pray on the sofas if they wanted to. But in the other half we set up four stations based on the ACTS way of praying: Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving and Petition. We pegged things onto fairy lights, wrote on pieces of paper, used post-it notes and we also used a roll of paper and a load of paints - all to help us pray for our CU and our university.
It was exciting to see people being encouraged as they found new ways of engaging with God and it was especially helpful to have a specific place to take time out and give it back to God.
“So many people loved it and can’t wait for more”
For me, prayer rooms have had a massive influence on making my faith my own. It was just so encouraging to see that within our CU. So many people just spontaneously turned up, or came for the worship session we planned and stayed afterwards. At one point we had nine people in the room at the same time!
So many people have told me they loved it and can't wait for more, so I think that means we’ll probably keep doing 24 hour prayer together! We will definitely do another day of prayer, and hopefully build enough momentum ready for a whole week in the future.
I would highly recommend running a prayer room. It's such a gentle way of discovering new ways of interacting with God. There is such space and freedom to explore God without it being overwhelming. It's really exciting to see how people enjoy having a space that pushes you towards God with creative ideas, rather than away from God with distractions.
There's no pressure in a prayer room - even with different stations, you don't have to do any of them. The intentionality also makes a prayer room so encouraging - you have to set aside time to go to the room - and watching other people do that is inspiring.
It's a beautiful, simple kind of inspiring that pushes you towards Jesus in your daily life.
