Shine Light in the Darkness this AdventTandia Hughes - 13 Dec 2016
" be God's light in the dark places..."
Advent: a time of anticipation; excitement and waiting as we celebrate the birth of Jesus. Emmanuel. God with us.
However, the festive season can be really difficult - a time of loneliness and sadness for many people. For half the world, Christmas also falls in the middle of winter - shorter days, longer hours and darkness can be challenging.
In the middle of this festive season, we’re called to be God’s light in the dark places; and that can mean spending time and energy to support others who find this season hard.
“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
- John 1: 5
5 Ways to shine God’s light this Christmas
1. Pray
’Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.’ - Philippians 4:6
The most powerful thing we can do to support others is to pray. Pray directly, pray with intent and pray with expectancy. Pray that God will be the light for those who find this season challenging. Pray specifically for individuals you know who find Christmas difficult. Pray for God’s heart and passion for them.
2. Encourage
“‘Therefore encourage one another and build each other up” - 1 Thessalonians 5
How can you be an encourager? This season, strive to be more encouraging, whether that’s through a simple text message, kind words or Bible verse. For those who are experiencing sadness over the festive season, simple words of encouragement can bring hope.
3. Listen
“ Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak...” - James 1:19
Invest in listening to those who want to share the things they're finding hard. Think of that person in your community; on your campus; in your town, who may not feel heard or valued - spend time listening to their story.
4. Take Time
“Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God.” - 1 John 4:7
When there are so many things happening around Christmas, quality time with others is a very significant sacrifice. Strive to take time out from the festive busyness to spend with others. Whether that’s stopping to chat to the guy who sells the Big Issue, or carving out time to go for coffee with someone who’s feeling lonely. Prioritise time to spend with others
5. Invite Others
“Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.” - Romans 15:7
Hosting others is one of the easiest ways to show that you care. Invite someone to your flat or house for a hot chocolate or meal - or invite them to your church carol service to spend time singing Christmas songs and meeting your Church community.
This Advent, take time to spend with others - be God’s light in the dark places.
