Are You On Pills? - 3 Nov 2004
That was the question I was asked by a guy standing near me as I was bopping away to the sounds of DJ Steve Lawler at a club called The End on September 24th. “No”, I replied. “Really?” he said, looking puzzled. “You look like you are!” Sarah Smith writes from London, England.I explained that I was just very into the music and didn’t need pills to enhance my club experience. I then went on to say that I was with a group of friends and none of us were on pills. He couldn’t believe it. All of his mates had been pill popping and were in the other room crashed out and in no state to join him on the dance floor.
I went on to tell him that we were all Christians and were spending our time communicating with God as we danced. He nearly dropped his bottle of beer in surprise! He thought it was great though and made the interesting comment that he liked being around “clean” people.
24-7 Mission
A group of us had gone out clubbing and praying together as a new and growing 24-7 prayer Mission Team which is currently doing a club and pray tour around 7 of the most influential clubs in London. We are a group of people who are passionate about God and passionate about clubbing and God has been showing us that He is overwhelmingly passionate about the clubbing community. He is desperate to bring transformation to the lives of clubbers in London, the UK and all over the world.
We really want to serve Him in His plans to move London’s clubbing community and this club and pray tour that we are doing at the moment feels like the first stage of something else that is yet to come. We are in a phase of preparation right now.
So far we have been to Turnmills, the Ministry of Sound and now, The End, praying as the spirit leads us, worshipping and being completely open to what He wants us to do.
The nights have all been very different to each other, but one thing they have had in common is that it has always been quite hard to get into praying when we first arrive (this is despite the fact that we always pray together before we go out). At The End, in particular, some of us found it really hard to stay focused and it was a case of really pushing through and constantly coming back to the name of Jesus in order to keep grounded in what we were there for.
However, we also seemed to have more conversations with fellow clubbers than before and it gave us a glimpse into how God may want to use us.
We’d love to be able to start building relationships with people and to “be Jesus” to them where we can…..we are not sure how this will happen or what it will look like, but God does – He has the plan! For now, we are simply being faithful in preparing the way.
Ibiza and Ayia Napa
God has already been moving in Ibiza and Ayia Napa where 24-7 Mission Teams have been serving Him throughout the summer for the past few years now.
Also, all around the UK, Christian clubbers, DJ’s, dancers, promoters and music makers have been raised up to do God’s stuff. A group of us from all over the place (Portsmouth, Southampton, Bournemouth, Reading, Guildford, Woking, Bognor Regis, London, Sheffield and Bristol) actually met up recently in Southampton to share and pray together. We’re all involved in different areas…..holding club nights, discipling clubbing mates, clubbing and praying etc. But we are also one big team making ourselves available to God to do His thing in clubland and looking forward to what He has in store.
Our next club and pray session in London is on Friday 26th November and we will be going to Heaven. The night is “Gatecrasher” and Paul van Dyck will be DJing – so should be a good one! If you would like to join us, please contact me on [email protected]. Also, if you are not a clubber, but you would like to support us in prayer, I would love to hear from you too!
Not in the UK / London?
If you fancy doing something like this in your own local area, do get in touch. We would like to have a 24-7 Prayer co-ordinated clubbing weekend in Spring 2005 where groups of clubbers all over the place are clubbing praying and worshipping as a community together. What a powerful weekend that could be!
