Pray for Peace at Christmas - 24 Dec 2004
Peace at Christmas
At Christmas, we focus our thoughts and prayers on those parts of the world which do not know peace. Justice charity Tearfund offer us these practical guides to praying for peace this Christmas...
In Iraq, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan, Haiti and many other countries, conflict during the past year has brought suffering to millions of people. As always, the poorest and most vulnerable have been the victims, and in a cruel twist, as seen in the reported killing of aid worker Margaret Hassan in Iraq, even those dedicated to bringing relief and help have been targeted.

Children have again been in the forefront of the casualties. The killing of more than 150 children in their school in Beslan, Russia (left), in September reminded the world of the cruelty of conflict and war. Since 1990, 3.6 million people have been killed in wars around the world, and almost half of these were children. The number of deaths caused indirectly by the consequences of conflict is even higher. |
As Christians throughout the world prepare to celebrate the coming of the Prince of Peace into a broken and hurting world, please pray that people traumatised by conflict and war would continue to find peace and hope in him.
The following material can be used as a prayer sheet designed for OHP use or as a simple poster - it can be found as a PDF by clicking here.
