G8: time to make a change for good... - 14 Jun 2005

'...if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday...' Isaiah 58:10

Chris Lindsay, our wild, Edinburgh-based Scot says it like he means it...

"A lot of attention is being placed on Scotland and Edinburgh this summer as the leaders of the world's eight most powerful leaders (the G8) gather in the country to make big decisions about how the world is run. Top of the agenda this year is a plan to tackle the problems which cripple the continent of Africa where 30,000 children are dying every single day as a result of extreme poverty. There are a lot of positive noises being made by a number of the G8 leaders but we need to pray that they make good on their promises and take serious and immediate action on this issues.

God has made his opinion of poverty known: commanding us to uphold justice and speak up for the poor. While Scotland is the focus of the actual gathering this is a global event with global consequences so it is important that the church around the world prays at this time, especially the church in the nations which make up the G8 (The US, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia and the UK)

The G8 leaders are meeting from the 7-9th of July. Would you consider running a prayer room around that time? We in Edinburgh are running one from the 29th June - 6th July, the week running up to the meeting to be praying for the leaders as they make up their minds and for peace and a righteous spirit among the protests going on in that time. If any of you will be in Scotland at that time do come and join us.

For more info on the campaign to tackle world poverty which is being presented to the G8 leaders see
www.makepovertyhistory.org. If you live in a G8 nation then make your options known to your leaders - it’s our duty as the church."

If you're thinking of heading up to the G8 protests, do seek out the 24-7prayer room running in the city over that week. Contact Anneleen on [email protected] for more info.
