USA: Clothing with a cause.... - 10 Aug 2005

Apathy is a heart-born pathogen, writes Rebecca Dunning  of Haylo Clothing :The definition of a pathogen is simply something that causes disease.

I’ve been there.  You’ve been there.  Let’s be honest.

My husband and I launched our clothing line, Haylo Clothing Company in March this year with a desire to do something about it and to see older teens and young adults impacted by redeemed art that would give props to Jesus without being an embarrassment to wear.

Our dream was to market apparel that would be associated with a cause and would work to purge this disease of indifference from our lives.

Just like the HIV virus needs blood to survive; apathy needs a cold, bored heart to thrive.

We have traveled around the world and have been touched to give to the poor and those working with them but it wasn’t until I read an interview in  Relevant Magazine that it all came together for me.

As I read the quote from U2's Bono, “If the church doesn’t respond to this, [the AIDS pandemic] the church will be made irrelevant.”

The words seemed to loom out at me like the large scrolling letters from the beginning of Episode 4, 5 & 6 of Star Wars.

I was haunted to pray, yes, but to throw another quote at you from Pete Greig in his book Red Moon Rising, “Prayer without action is just religion in hiding.”

So instead of just making a buck and languishing in religion we are dedicated to address issues of hypocrisy in our own lives.  This effort is summed up by our catch phrase, Clothing With A Cause.

When you sport our apparel you can be confident that the portion of every sale from day one goes to one of these 3 partnerships:
  • Children of Promise International which works with orphans, widows and destitute children worldwide.   They also played a role in disaster relief from the tsunami. Find out more by clicking on   http://www.promise.org/
  • Friends of ours, Greg and Helaine Walton in the mountains of Guatemala who are educating Mayan young people both academically and practically to help them recover from a 34 year civil war.
  • All Nations Mozambique, a charity  providing loving homes, nutritious meals and medicine for AIDS orphans.  They also work to educate the community about ways to combat the spread of the virus.
Check us out at www.hayloclothing.com and perhaps you’ll be moved to address some issues of social injustice.  If nothing else you can acquire some tight gear!
