A Unified Front

Have you ever sung in an amateur choir or enjoyed a performance by a particularly moving one? Here are a few observations about choirs. First, both groups are made up of a variety of people whose level of musical gifting varies. Some can read music proficiently and some may not be able to read it at all.

Next, not everyone is singing the same part. Not only are they not singing the same part but they could not sing someone else’s part even if they wanted to because of their vocal range. A really good choir is one in which individual voices do not stand out unless they are meant to in a solo setting. Another mark of a good choir is one that is committed to coming together and working together for the good of the whole group.

Perhaps the two most important traits about choirs are these. When singing together, each member of the choir must keep their eyes on the director so that they will do everything in sync with him or her. A truly outstanding director will draw people’s attention and hold their gaze as they sing and bring out every ounce of talent and desire in the process.

From these verses we see that God’s plan is not uniformity but unity—everyone moving in the same direction, under the leadership of the Holy Spirit, in the way that He chooses. Picture Jesus in your mind’s eye. As our Director, Leader and Head of His church, let us lock our gaze on His eyes, which are “like a flame of fire.” This is what brings real and lasting unity to the Body of Christ.
