Canada: how to pray for January's elections - 20 Dec 2005

Canada's Parliament
We've been getting a load of very bold e.mails during these days leading up to the January Canadian elections that are telling us how to pray and what the vote in the next national election here in Canada should result in.  Many of the e.mails boldly tell us which candidates are" of God" and which ones are ... well ... not from God.

This stuff that goes on in Ottawa is very important...it is, after all, Canada's capital city. Every decision made in Ottawa affects every region of the country

How Should We Pray??
It all really puts those of us who have been commissioned to pray for those in authority in a tough spot.  We don't want to curse people, but rather bless them.  We know that labelling people as evil is wrong, but it's sometimes tough to know how to interact with a candidate who has a world-view different then us.  How then should we pray?

Rob Parker, a friend of 24-7 Prayer who heads up the National House of Prayer just down the road from the Parliment buildings notes that,

"Ottawa is the spiritual gateway to the rest of the nation. What comes through a gate has influence over what the gate was designed to guard. In biblical times the gateway was the place the city's elders met to make decisions and to settle disputes. Decisions made had an effect upon the life and destiny of those under the authority of the elders. Many of us tend to think of our government only in critical ways. We need to repent of these attitudes and start holding up those in leadership through our prayers."

Here are a few healthy ways that Rob suggests we pray for the election and all the people involved in it:
  • Can we be so bold as to ask for Jesus and His spiritual government to disrupt our Christmas?
  • That media will not be permitted to empower a negative, mud-slinging campaign.
  • That there would be fair and equitable reporting on all candidates.
  • Protection for all M.P.s and their volunteers on their busy campaign trails. Particularly for the volunteers of Christian leaders who may come under national level spiritual warfare.
  • A guard over the speech of candidates that will not permit empty promises or untruths to feed their campaigns.
  • That the Church of Canada will not sit back, but will rise up, and intercede for those who are trying to stand for righteousness and truth.
