South Africa: Adam's accidental prayer rooms - 10 Dec 2004
How do you accidentally start 24-7prayer rooms at two South African university campuses – including one in a bathroom where a student is baptised in the tub at the end of the week? Adam Cox (see pic below) isn’t quite sure himself, but somehow it happened on his missions visit to the Rainbow Nation. Quietly spoken and thoughtful (and busy!), Adam's organised a few prayer rooms and helps with the Transit young leaders course at Floyd McClung’s church in Kansas City, USA, where Pete and Samie Greig are living for the year.

Adam says: “The Christian group on the Pretoria University campus (which has 50,000 students) were doing a missions week. I was there for the event and shared a few stories about 24-7 prayer with their mission team. They ended up turning their mission house, in the centre of the campus, into a prayer house! South Africa’s history of apartheid meant it was amazing to see barriers broken down between black and white students as they prayed together. The tiny bathroom there became the “nothing but the blood of Jesus room”. They put mud all over the walls and people were able to wipe if off as a symbol of Jesus’ blood washing their sins away. At one point there were 60 people in the house – it was packed! |

I heard a noise in the bathroom – I found 7 people in there laughing and smiling. I asked what was going on and they told me ‘This girl’s just given her life to the Lord in the bathroom!’ A girl also got baptised in the bathtub the same week – there were 17 people in there, including the girl’s family which was amazing, and others who were looking in through the window!”
