In the Old Testament, the "high places" were those mountain tops where pagan religions gathered to worship their gods and godesses.

In 1 Kings 14.23 we read about Asherah poles, shrines, and sacred stones "on every high hill and under every spreading tree". Eventually the long walk to these hilltops got a bit long and these "high places" were build right in the midst of the towns themselves (2 Kings 17.9).

 

So what about today?  It's been a while since I saw any altars under big trees in my city - how about yours?  In reality,they're still very much around us ... gathering places of youth culture where the gods of the age are worshipped.  Maybe in your town it's a street that's been dubbed, "the strip", or perhaps it's a university campus or certain night club or cafe.

 

24-7 has always had a soft spot for these high places and the people who hang out in them.  God's called us to "go" into our worlds and what better place to start then the present day "high places" in youth culture?  In fact, this month there are prayer rooms running on at least 3 University/College campuses across Canada.  Here are some comments about them:

 

Redeemer University, Ontario > "Just a quick heads up to let you know that 24-7 is finally happening here on campus (Redeemer University College). I think people are stoked. it just so happens that our student senate elections are during that week. There is also a big conference on campus that week for ministers and pastors in the area!!  Yesterday a girl approached me to let me know she couldnt sign up because she's sorta giving up on God, and I challenged her to sign up for a slot and to just sit there and to listen to what God wants to tell her.
