Good Friday? - 25 Mar 2005

3 months ago today, a wall of water struck South East Asia killing at least 100,000 people and making millions homeless. The world wept and wondered 'where is God?'

About 2000 years ago, a man was crucified. In his suffering he too wondered 'Where is God?' crying out 'Why have you forsaken me?'

Only with 3 days' hindsight may we dare to offend such a moment with the label 'Good' Friday.
  • Do you dare, today, to look Mary the mother of Jesus in the eyes and call it a good day as her son suffers?
  • Do you dare tell Peter, wracked by guilt and self-imposed suffering that this day is anything but evil?
  • Do you dare tell Judas?
  • Do you dare tell Jesus?
Before this can become a good day it has always and forever to be known as the worst day of our lives; the darkest day of human history. A day of bereavement. Of unexplainable and intolerable agony. A day of sin, guilt, hopelessness and despair.

Before the dawn comes the night.

And we must wait and watch and wonder here with our hopes dashed. Our unrequited prayers an eternity from Easter. Suffer and doubt. No easy answers on this evil day.

I think I can live with that.

"My soul is overwhelmed
with sorrow
to the point of death...
Could you men not keep watch
    with me for one hour?

Watch and pray
so that you will not fall into temptation.
The spirit is willing,
but the body is weak."
