Mexico: 24-7 Spain ministers in Parral - 4 Nov 2005

I have never been comfortable with the idea of leading a mission trip. And I certainly didn't plan on leading trips to Mexico each summer with friends. But I'm learning that God has a certain way of dealing with my plans...

It all started four years ago when a family friend, who is a pastor, invited a friend and me to visit Mexico. When we were in Mexico, we soon realised that something was going on. I am not quite sure how to describe it, but I knew God was working. He was teaching the nation of Mexico to love. It seems simple, doesn’t it? I had been to many conferences and meetings, but the truth is that I had never experienced anything like that.

"I knew God was working. He was teaching the nation of Mexico how to love."

It wasn’t that the music was incredible, nor that the songs where beautiful. It was that the nation was learning to love, all together like church.

The 2005 Mexico team
That was four years ago, and since then it has become tradition for me to spend a few weeks in Mexico before the start of each academic year. At first I went to receive, but now I continue to realise that you can’t receive without giving. So I’ve been giving for three years, giving up three weeks every year to the nation of Mexico. I love it. I love to see what God is doing, and I loved being able to bring something from Spain.

This year there were ten of us Spaniards who travelled to Mexico together. At first we were only going to go to a conference for a few days and then go to the North of Mexico to help a church in Parral Chihuahua.
It was the last day of the conference when a poster listing the conference’s scheduled workshops caught my eye. It said:
Prayer room in Parral's town square
Workshops: Worship leaders: Marco Barrientos
Pastors: Enrique Bremen
24-7 Prayer: Team from Spain

Of course, I had mentioned that a group of us would be there and were happy to help however we could, but, lead a workshop? Much to our surprise, the workshop room filled completely up and we had the privilege of sharing about 24-7 with close to 100 people. We shared what God is doing in Spain, challenged them to pray and then prayed for them.

Praying with people in Parral
After that we carried on with the plan: going to Parral to help a church there. Once again, God had different plans. We met the young people from the “Abundant Life of Parral” church and we set up a prayer room in the main town square. Whilst people prayed all day, there was a group of people talking to passers-by, asking them if they wanted prayer. We prayed for more than 150 prayer requests. We even appeared in the newspaper!
The thing is that I didn’t even want to lead a mission team. I have never wanted to, but God’s purposes were different from mine, His dream was more beautiful and His plan more incredible.

Now we are back in Spain. Yes, we brought something of Mexico back for Spain - but what's more is that we left something of ours there. God joined our hearts with our Mexican friends in a new way, and also allowed us to minister to some people in Parral. All of us have come back different from when we went. More in love with Him, more passionate about our country, and more ready to serve Him with everything that is lacking and everything that we have.
