Mozambique: Praying With AIDS Orphans - 1 Oct 2006

“I love the way God connects people. It’s been a weekend filled with tears, laughter and joy.”

These are Adri’s words, one of the 24-7 gang who headed up to Mozambique a few weekends ago with a car full of people, biltong (a proudly South African snack), and baby diapers. Their mission: to help missionary friends who have just started up a home for orphans and babies born with AIDS.

Mozambique can be found on the South East coast of Africa. Because of civil war and drought it is one of the poorest countries in the world, and it has been decimated by the AIDS epidemic in the region. So there was plenty for the team to do during the weekend!
Jobs at the orphanage included caring for the babies and celebrating a birthday with Aninya, one of the young orphans. There was also time for a drive in a local taxi (always a nerve-wracking experience) listening to kwaito music, and for a drink of Coca Cola at the local shebeen (informal bar).

Perhaps the most moving experience for Adri and her friends was praying for the sick at the local hospital. As they prayed, they felt God moving and sensed His peace touching the sick. Strong winds outside scattered the leaves of the palm trees, but God’s peace filled the hospital. Adri summed up the experience as follows:

“Just seeing the need and engaging with it in the most simple way has really changed us”.

Please pray with Adri and the team that God will send rivers of living water to this thirsty land.
