Pray for Egypt as violence continuesSara Kandiah - 2 Sep 2013

We recently published a blog post asking you to stand in prayer for Egypt as violent protests broke out in the country. Our friends at Tearfund sent out a prayer alert with some specific prayer points as the country remains in a state of turmoil.

August saw outbreaks of violence in Egypt as security forces stormed two protest camps, which had been set up by supporters of ousted president Mohammed Morsi after his overthrow last month.

Hundreds are reported to have been killed and many more injured in the confrontation, which has ended a six-week stand-off between pro-Morsi protesters and the new interim government.

Mr Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood party has hit back by encouraging nationwide retaliatory strikes, and there have been violent attacks against government institutions, police stations, private property and some Christian targets.

A state of emergency has been declared, and curfews have been imposed in cities across Egypt.

  • Please pray that this incident will not spark further violence, and for a peaceful resolution to be reached between the new government and Mr Morsi’s supporters. Pray earnestly for a spirit of forgiveness and reconciliation to prevail.
  • Ask God to pour out his comfort on all who have lost loved ones in these clashes.
  • Pray for protection for all those at risk of retaliatory attacks, such as Christians and other vulnerable minority groups.
  • Please lift up Christians in Egypt, asking that God will give them patience as they pray for peace and justice for their country.
