Emmaus Road Eucharist
Created by the Kansas City Boiler Room
SIGN OF THE CROSS
Greeting: Blessed be the Lord Jesus who comes to meet us in the Scriptures and in the Eucharist. May his peace, which drives away all fear, be always with you.
INTRODUCTION
Leader: One of the loveliest stories in the Gospel
is the one where the Risen Christ joins two
of his disciples on the road to Emmaus.
He reveals himself to them in the Scriptures
and in the 'breaking of bread'.
The story of Emmaus becomes our story
in this Eucharist as we listen to the Word of God
and join Jesus at the altar-table.
[pause]
Leader: Lord Jesus, you are our companion on our journey of faith
All: Lord, have mercy.
Leader: Lord Jesus, you speak to us when the Scriptures are read
All: Christ, have mercy.
Leader: Lord Jesus, you nourish us with the bread of the Eucharist
All: Lord, have mercy.
OPENING PRAYER
All: Option A: O God of all the prophets, you fulfilled your promise of old that your Christ would suffer and so rise in glory. Stir up our faith, that our hearts may burn within us at the sound of his word, and our eyes be opened to recognize him in the breaking of the bread. Grant this through Jesus Christ, the first-born from the dead, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. AMEN.
All: Option B: O God of wonders, you made this day for joy and gladness. Let the risen Lord abide with us this day, opening the Scriptures to us and breaking bread in our midst. Set our hearts aflame and open our eyes, that we may see in his sufferings all that the prophets foretold and recognize him at this table, the Christ now entered into glory, who lives with you now and always in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. AMEN.

PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL
Leader: Recalling how the disciples on the road to Emmaus found comfort in God's Word and recognized Christ in the breaking of bread, we pray for the needs of the Church and the world. With confidence we pray:
All: Stay with us, Lord.
Leader: For our Parish: that it may be a community where Jesus of Nazareth is proclaimed in Word, encountered in the Eucharist, and seen on the face of each person around us. We pray:
All: Stay with us, Lord.
Leader: For all the sick and dying in our community: may they find strength in Christ who had first to suffer before entering into glory. We pray:
All: Stay with us, Lord.
Leader: For the sad and disillusioned and those who feel that they have lost their way in a meaningless world, that Christ may renew their faith and hope. We pray:
All: Stay with us, Lord.
Leader: For peace in the world, especially in the Philippines and in all countries where terrorism and violence have become a part of daily life. We pray:
All: Stay with us, Lord.
[The Presider may add a Petition that is local / relevant]
Leader: Thank you, God, for revealing yourself in your beloved Son, Jesus. Wherever your word is spoken, wherever bread is broken, may your name be hallowed forever and ever. AMEN.
PRAYER OVER THE GIFTS
All: Lord our God, provident Father, we bring you simple gifts of bread and wine. Grant that Jesus may set our hearts afire when he speaks to us words that make life worth living. Grant also that he be our food on the road to you, for we believe that he is our Risen Lord, who stays with us now and for ever. AMEN.
INVITATION TO THE LORD'S PRAYER
Leader: In thanksgiving to God for his Son's presence among us, let us pray:
All: Our Father...
Deliver us, Lord, from every evil and give us always the peace and joy of your presence among us. Keep us free from doubt and discouragement as we prepare for the final coming among us of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
PRAYER FOR PEACE
All: Lord Jesus Christ, on the evening of the first day of the week, you walked with your disheartened disciples on the road to Emmaus and you said to them: "Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer and so enter his glory"? Grant that we who have heard the message of Easter, may experience his presence as we enjoy the peace and unity of his kingdom where you live for ever and ever. May the peace which Christ brought to his apostles be with you always. AMEN
EXCHANGE OF PEACE
Leader: Jesus' first words to his disciples after his Resurrection were, "Peace be with you." Let us now offer the Master's greeting to one another.
PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION
All: Lord of life, we thank your for Jesus the Nazarene. Through him you have worked mighty deeds, wonders and signs, and have exalted him to your right hand. Send your Spirit upon us so that, like the disciples on the road to Emmaus, our hearts may burn within us as we read the Scriptures and break bread in the name of Christ our Lord. AMEN
