Getu's Story
“I used to think that the only place to discuss the things of God was in church. But now, God’s Word is part of our everyday lives.”
Getu is a storyteller living in rural Ethiopia, where many people can’t read or write. This means that sharing stories via word of mouth is really important. For Getu, it means that he is able to share the Bible in his local language with the people living in his community.
“Instead of preaching, I simply share a Bible story,” Getu says. “Everyone is attentive. I can tell they internalize the story. Most participate in the discussion afterward. Storytelling opened the door for me. I used to think that the only place to discuss the things of God was in church. But now, God’s Word is part of our everyday lives. We often talk about things we’ve heard from the Bible when we work in the fields, chat over coffee or walk in the road. When the ideas are clear, it’s easy to see how to apply the passage to our lives.”
Because many of the Ethiopian community are farmers, the stories that Jesus tells in the Gospels are especially relevant. So for Getu, his favourite stories to tell are the Prodigal son and the lost sheep, because people understand the pain of losing a sheep. They make the connections and understand the Christian message.
Thanks to Seed Company, translation of the Bible into local dialects, and passionate translators like Getu, are making God’s words accessible to so many more people.
Maricel's Story
“Serving God is good. I hope someday I will be like Samuel, called by God for some specific task.”
When Maricel was younger, her mother - a witch doctor - threatened her Father - a Christian- in their home in the Philippines: “I will kill you; if I give up witchcraft the spirits will come and kill us all.”
Eventually, Maricel’s mother became a Christian and there was peace in their home.
Maricel became a Christian when she was 9. At 18, a Church friend who was a Bible translator asked Maricel to check the comprehension level of her work. When she read the story of God calling Samuel — in her mother tongue — Maricel thought, “Serving God is good. I hope someday I will be like Samuel, called by God for some specific task.”
Today, Maricel is a Bible translator, currently working on the Old Testament. Of all the scripture, she especially loves Lamentations:
“In that book I saw the people of God suffering because of their sins; but in spite of that, I also saw God’s love for them. God’s love is important because even if I am translating the Word of God and I read it daily — it is before me daily — yet I still sin against God. And when I sin, I feel God’s love for me in spite of what I have done against Him.
I thank God that He changed my family. I thank God because of His love for us.”
We're partnering with Seed Company because they're doing an incredible work.
